Festival of the Moon, Wakefield: Summer 2019

An event at which the future of the former Market Hall building in Wakefield started new life as a cultural hub, summer 2019’s Festival of the Moon in the West Yorkshire city celebrated the 50th anniversary of NASA’s moon landings. Around the centrepiece of artist, Luke Jerram’s ‘Museum of the Moon’ artwork, Wakefield Council and partner producers brought together a fortnight of music, wellbeing, visual arts and other performance events. The festival received complete communications support to meet its visitor targets and messaging objectives.

Developing a plan that included media relations and advocacy, to promote event ownership amongst the wider community of cultural, leisure, public service and commercial organisations, print and digital marketing activity was provided by freelancer, Sue Fletcher with design direction from HemingwayDesign. The event attracted 36,000 visitors, exceeding the target of 20,000. Media coverage included BBC 6 Music, Metro, Yorkshire Post and repeated, valuable local press via Wakefield Express and BBC Radio Leeds.
