The Coral: Cassette Tape Amnesty

The Coral are back after a five-year absence, with the Liverpool-based band releasing their eighth studio album: “Distance Inbetween” on Ignition Records. In writing the biography for the band ahead of the album campaign, which got underway in late 2015, a set of clear themes developed, which the band was keen to play on in helping their fans realise the creative genesis of the record. One of those was the sound of cassette tapes and the fact that the album would get a cassette release.

Asked to consider a media story to draw attention to the album and establish key messages in the minds of the media and record buyers, Perspective Communications approached the band and label with the idea of a ‘cassette tape amnesty’ – simply send the band an old compilation tape and they will cleanse it, taping over it with the new album for free. The initiative generated immediate coverage on 6 Music, NME, the Evening Standard and more, before settling at the heart of conversation for further interviews and reviews including Five Live and MOJO.
